Influence of Social Forces and Attracting Positive Life Response
There are many forces related to the social environment that effect life response. For example, there may be a social environment in which change and evolution is going on, and therefore one may (or may not) be supported in one's initiatives by the environment. Or one in a lower position is depending on one of a higher position of relative strength, which is not good to do, and one overcomes this. Or one mistakenly gets involved with someone on a project who is secretly bad will to bear, and overcomes this. There are many of these forces.

A Thing and Its Opposite are True
Man is filled with endless opinions. He is more than happy to express them to any eager ear willing to listen. Literature is full of such characters, and we laugh as they extol the virtue of their ignorance. Mrs. Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, the mother of five unmarried daughters is a prime example.

The foolish person who acts from his whims and urges is not a rational person. Like Mrs. Bennet, she thinks with her body; not her mind. She follows her needs and desires, and avoids rational thinking. This is the irrational individual. The rational person is different, as he thinks before acting, or at least considers an idea through a thought process. The trouble is he too is irrational in his own way because he comes up with one opinion through that thinking process and sticks to it virulently, avoiding all others. The spiritually rational individual is different still. He too uses the power of reason to consider a matter, but is willing to examine all sides. His goal is to embrace the Truth from all angles -- i.e. to seek the Whole that contains all its constituent parts, as well as the Essence. He has shed mere opinions of the irrational and even the rational individual in his pursuit of truth. Armored with that Truth, he is well position to act rightfully and forcefully. He will never fail this way, while the irrational and rational are constantly meeting with failure.

In the process of becoming the Spiritually Rational, he embraces one overwhelmingly powerful principle. It is that everything and its opposite are true. He knows that any opinion he extols can be challenged by the reverse. From that poise, he has a fully open mind. From that poise, he is able to move beyond the limits of mind -- which guards its own limited truth -- to spiritual mind, which opens to all position, including the very opposite of what one believes. It is thus supra-mental truth perception.

Richard Nixon was a brute as president. His social views were anachronistic. His political ploys poisonous, and his foreign interventions tragic to say the least. We have strong opinions of him in America. Yet he went to China and helped open up that country to the modern world. We see the emergence of this great country now on the world stage. The fixed view of Nixon is challenged. The opposite of what we thought he was is also true.

Everything we believe about a matter somewhere has its opposite. The spiritually rational man knows this, and uses it as one of the great tools for knowledge acquisition, problem solving, decision-making, and right action (or inaction). Seeing and embracing the opposite is spiritual technique based on a spiritual principle of life, that lies beyond any opinion, any thought, any reasoned argument; actually beyond the bounds of Mind's capacities. It is there in the Cosmic Mind; in the unitarian consciousness of the Divine Creator.

Miscellaneous Thoughts on Discovering the Opposite

• Every truth has its opposite
• Each great truth or fact co-exists with its very opposite.
• Mind understands by seeking the opposite, confronting it till it sees the truth of the opposite is its own truth.
• A force hidden in the opposite is compelled to find itself. The opposition party will always assert.
• A force hidden in the opposite must in its inmost nature be moved to find itself.
• God seeks a higher delight than bliss in creation. Therefore he creates contradictions, splitting one into two opposites. The truth is hidden in the opposites. The conflict of their surfaces generates a struggle of intensity to bring the hidden truth out. Thus the static bliss changes into active delight.
• We often see wrong thoughts shooting in in an excellent occasion and the opposite. It is an embarrassing emotion that we feel. They indicate the existence of opposites, rather coexistence.
• If similar things occupy your mind accept the opposite maxim and persuade your mind to emotionally except them.
• Right or wrong yielding the opposite is done at the point of greatest creativity of Life.
• Life presents its possibilities through its opposites to one who is still in his mind.
• Man's purpose of birth will be complete, if he is able to understand or fully conceive the very opposite of what his being seeks. For example, one who longs for friendship should understand betrayal.
• When a rule is not absolute, its opposite is also true.
• The same symptom can indicate the opposite.
• Opposite qualities can be expressed by the same character.
• Any single principle has its opposite. (MSS, extracted)

Holding Opposites in Our Mind to Know the Whole Truth
It has been said recently that blacks in America have substantial opportunities to rise, but have become complacent and self-satisfied. If one is honest, one must see that this is true in the current environment (2005). It is said by others that blacks in America are being ignored by the society, indicating a virulent contempt and callousness of the government and the people. If one is honest, one must accept that this too is true. Then which is it: one or the other? They appear to be contradictory beliefs.

Is it not possible that both are true, but that the human mind cannot hold these contradictory opposites together at once. The human mind, supported by a irrepressible negative vital/emotional being takes a side -- holding its one truth in opposition to all others, despite the wider understanding of the whole that includes all truths. This is unfortunately the way the mind of man functions. It is exclusive to all other possibilities other than its own. It takes one side out of a myriad of truths, and takes delight in REINFORCING its opinion whenever possible.

On the other hand, the person of higher consciousness moves out of the exclusivity of mind and embraces the full truth, whatever that might be; even, as in the example above, where the truths appear virtually opposite one another. The higher spiritualized mind embraces all truths because it seeks them; even what appears as contradictory opposites. In the lower consciousness, however, one is adamant about one's own position. In this world, all is divided existence, opposites opposing one another; me vs. you. In the higher consciousness, opposites, contradictions are complementaries, i.e. they work together to make a fuller, more whole, more integral truth. As man evolves, he will move to the spirit in mind that that can hold all truths, including contradictory ones. Then he will take a big leap on the road to his further evolution and transformation.

We can begin that process by moving to our deeper consciousness within, away from the surface bubblings, to silence; and then deeper still to the evolving soul. There one sees beyond the contradictions, embracing all sides, seeing to the True Truth that lie beyond the surface view. From there, all decisions made will be great ones, that inevitably benefits all.

Evolution through Organism (as Opposed to Organization) as Law of Life and of Evolution
Society is an organism whereas government is an organisation. An organisation is administered through rules and regulations and human instruments. An organism acts by itself whose rules and regulations are not known by man. It can use any human being as an unconscious instrument. Or it can even dispense with that. 

We see all this in P & P. The points at which the organisation turns into organism will be very educative. The coming of Bingley and Darcy is in response to the aspiration of unmarried girls in the village for the arrival of eligible bachelors. It is an act at the level of organism. Mrs. Bennet's active initiatives all are actions of organisation. Towards the end of the story, during the two visits of Bingley to her house, she actively takes initiative for the boy and girl to meet alone. The first time it didn't work. The second time it worked. It is an action of society as an organisation. The marriage of Jane and Bingley is at that level, the surface of the society. Elizabeth's marriage is not at that level. A stronger force more widely pressing on the society brings about her marriage. Her meeting Darcy at Hunsford for the first time and meeting him a second time at Pemberley, are actions of the society as an organism.

On page 723 of The Life Divine, Sri Aurobindo speaks of the skeptical folly, immense indolence, enormous intellectual timidity to outgrow habit of  the physical being. Next He says  Life where it chooses to conquer, conquers. This is in constant evidence and the physical being's doubt is not overcome by this evidence. When a situation becomes impossible and the known organisations of life have no answer for it, if life chooses to remedy it for higher reasons it remedies, as in the case of Lydia's marriage and Darcy's second proposal.

In management the company is treated as an organisation. The rules of the organisation can expand the company several fold, even fifty or a hundred times. But when the company is considered as an organism, its growth to the size of the society cannot be prevented. Many small touches of this phenomenon are seen in American life because life is more in evidence than the organised society. In every individual act or social act, on the surface is the action of the organisation. Below in the depth is the movement of life, society acting as an organism. To read the story from this point of view can bring out the clear distinction between society as an organism and society as an organisation. Organisation changing into organism is evolution. Organisation replacing another organisation is revolution. Life achieves when it is determined to achieve, in spite of the organisation. To be able to see such acts in our life is yogic perception. To bring about that change is to release the yogic force. Society releases that force unconsciously.  Man can consciously do that.

The leap in the evolution is not of transfer but of transformation because the force from above descends and is responded to by the involved force inside. That is what the evolution of form of Darwin misses. In a personal discussion with a person like WS or WA, dozens of instances from our own lives can be shown. The phenomena can be made very evident from P & P. This phenomenon is a law of life. And it is a law of evolution. Once the phenomenon is demonstrated, the insufficiency of the evolution of form which inverses cause and effect is rationally demonstrable. It requires a theoretical clarity in terms of inexorable facts. Suppose you do this presentation to S and A, it will be more than clear to you.

One peculiarity of this phenomenon mentioned by Sri Aurobindo is not to destroy the lower but to transform it is the aim. He says the condition for this transformation is the consent of the lower for that purpose to the higher so that the higher could trample them down. That is the inmost aim of ethics. In other words, progress for the lower is its willingness to be trampled on by the higher for the purposes of transformation. This willingness is the aspiration for evolution. That may be called one secret of evolution. In social evolution it is presently done by fear, mercenary motive and helplessness. It must be done by the strength which is used for the voluntary submission for this cruelty.  This thought is there on page 714. (MSS, slightly modified, italicized emphasis added)

Relationship Between Major and Minor Problems
It is a law of life that the abolition of a major problem will be followed by minor problems unless the major relief is received with gratitude. (MSS)

Armed Against an Eventuality Prevents it from Occurring
-It is a truth of life that when you are armed against an eventuality, it never comes to pass. Life hits unconscious people. When you are armed, you become conscious.

In the 2nd World War, the German submarines were sinking a large number of Allied battleships. At one point, Britain successfully decoded the German submarine messages and waited for the next event. The next event never came to pass. And with that, the tide of war turned and led the Allies to victory.

-Mother Earth will not quake when her sons are awake. What is true of a nation is true of an individual. He who is conscious, alert, who avails of opportunities, will have no problems. Nature or Fate will not strike him awake. (MSS)

Restoring the Equilibrium in Life
A rule in life is equilibrium. It is also the rule in Nature. Cyclone is Nature's restoring the equilibrium in atmospheric pressure. What we call health is an equilibrium of physical, vital and mental energies. Life constantly disturbs the equilibrium of the bodily health. Body and mind constantly restore that equilibrium. Our problems of life and problems of health - disease - are the process of that equilibrium being disturbed and restored. (MSS)

Speaking Calls Announces What is to Come in the Next Moment
Whatever you speak in one moment (Mrs. Bennet's dislike of children) announces in some fashion what is to come the next moment. (In Pride and Prejudice) In the letter from Jane, Jane expresses that her mother doesn't like the exuberant children and spends most of the day upstairs. Mrs. Bennet is attracted to negative things, not to joy and exuberance. After expressing this, Jane says 'After writing the above, a serious thing has occurred.' She goes on to mention the elopement.

People of lower plane (i.e. consciousness) acting on those in the higher plane receive the opposite results when they use their own strategies. (In Pride and Prejudice) The purpose of Lady Catherine's visit to Darcy later is to expose Elizabeth as an obstinate, headstrong, scheming girl; but it has the opposite effect on him.

No Exceptions to a Law, Principle
Exceptions to a law arise when someone in one plane ignores the other planes. No law has an exception. That which permits exceptions is a part. The whole is a whole and there is nothing outside it to claim exception. A law that fails one in a million times is NO LAW. (MSS, slightly altered)

Evolutionary Rule to Not Exclude
The rule of evolution is not to exclude what you have exceeded which eliminates totality. [E.g.] Had Siddhartha [in Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha] submitted to his father, not with an ignorant physical submission but with the knowledge that doctrines [of his father] were of no value and his own conviction was not ripe to be acted upon, whatever he had realised in 40 years would have been abridged into four years and his own realisation would have been greater. The choice for him was between submission and defiance. His defiance arose from a mental conviction for which his other parts were not ready. Had he submitted himself to his father, at least, he would have fully outgrown his father then, instead of later, after 20 or 30 years. (MSS)

Security without Truth
Seeking physical security alone without getting at its true cause enables greater insecurity.

Correspondence of Past, Present, and Future Events
There are rare occasions that reveal to us a past event that bears an exact one to one correspondence in all the minute details. E.g. a parcel of books that arrives from a friendly book seller as a gift reminds us a very small parcel of books we sent years earlier to a friend. Such an event, well understood, will reveal the principle of correspondence between the past and present events. [If we examine a negative correlation then] A gradual discovery of the whole of the past that now determines the present will enable us, by conscious decision, to win freedom from that determinism. In that measure, one becomes conscious.

As the past determines the present, the present determines the future. He who can create positive determinism of the future by the present wins a rare mastery through a rare freedom... The ideal will be to be free of any determinism of Nature and remain conscious all the time. (MSS)

Biological vs. Social vs. Spiritual Evolution
-Life functions with a wider background that divides into three layers - social evolution, biological status, spiritual poise. All of them can be called evolution.
-[In Pride and Prejudice] Lydia's elopement is a catastrophe from the point of view of respectable social living. It is no such thing from social evolution's point of view, even from the wider point of view of Mr. Bennet's family. It triggers social evolution.
-Behind it is the biological evolution of the physicality of Mrs. Bennet trying to raise itself to mentality or at least the vitality of social acceptability.
-Beyond the biological lies the spiritual evolution. In its own context, everything is evolving Spirit, evolving in Joy. There is nothing which is not a MARVEL.
-[In Pride and Prejudice] Elopement is social disgrace.
-Elopement is furthering social evolution.
-Elopement enables biological evolution in utter disregard of health or life.
-Spiritually you see everyone in the family gay, happy, cheerful always which denotes the surfacing of the spirit. (MSS)

The Hour of God
Sri Aurobindo said that this is the "Hour of God" when the awakened soul can accomplish in a short time what would normally take centuries in other periods. 

Small Effort, Great Results in The Hour of God
The Mother (of India) has said that this is the hour when man will be vastly rewarded for a tiny effort, as this is the Hour of God. She also said that a small error equally brings a great loss. The atmosphere of the earth is no longer what it was but has become Spiritual. (MSS)

The Hour of God
The Mother: "We are at one of those Hours of God, when the old bases get shaken, and there is great confusion; but it is a wonderful opportunity for those who want to leap forward, the possibility of progress is exceptional."

Victim's Limitation that Attracted a Wrong
We, society are conscious of the wrong, the bad, the evil done by one individual or party to another. Rarely, however, are we aware of how the victim attracted through their own falsehood, error, and ignorance this negativity from the negative doer in the first place.

Nature Pounds the Physical Consciousness Out of Peoples
Often when nations suffer great difficulty and tragedy it is Nature willfully driving out their Physical consciousness. That consciousness shows itself in that people's tendency towards any of anachronism, inertia, brutality, violence, harmful religion, ritual, insularity, indifference, materiality, etc. Nature uses physical disaster, war, and disease until the people move out of their physical consciousness to a higher vital or mental consciousness. In this sense Nature serves a great purpose. It would be better however if people can evolve by self-consciously moving out of their physical consciousness.

Learning from an Adversary
Even when one feels near certainty on an issue, there is always a modicum of truth to learn from an adversary in a discussion. This is not the normal human way, but we can learn to become supra-human. It is an excellent challenge.

Consecrating a Wrong Done to One
When one has been wronged but remain silent, and instead offers the problem to the Divine, life will respond suddenly with reward. If in that consecration his emotions are withdrawn from the perceived negative, then the  response will be enormous.

Subconscious Forces at Work in Accomplishment
The final outcome to whether or not one accomplishes is also reflected in the operations and undercurrent of forces that are subconscious to most humans. These include "life responses" and other hidden patterns and processes that seem to circumvent time and space and all sense of normal logic. Like the attempt to understand the mechanics of quantum physics if understood these secret patterns of life could reveal the ultimate mystery to endless accomplishment in life.

On "Demanding" Customers
When you consider a customer demanding, remember that what is being demanded is likely to be the very services, features, qualities, etc. that satisfy customers that follow.

Admiring the Energy of a Negative Person that Enables the Unfolding
There is a man of great persuasion, but false knowledge. Though we might disagree with the content of his thought, we can admire his intensity of energy, which heightens the issue and moves the play of life along, enabling higher harmonies to emerge from the contradiction and conflict.

Coordinated Energy
When two or more conflicting groups move closer together to create a greater harmony, they are actually tapping the highest aspects of organization, which enables a vast coordinated power of energy to be released that can result in vast accomplishment.

Process of Creation Mirrors All Process in Life
The process of creation (by which any aspect of existence is able to create something anew out of itself) is essentially the same on all planes of existence -- spiritual, mental, vital, physical; and mirrors the process by which the universe itself was created from out of the One. The process can be seen in how physical objects, the material, are created, or in the mental imaginative processes that enabled a Shakespeare to create his works. It can be seen as it relates to psychology of human character, attitudes and emotions; to the sociology of organizations, nations and their development; to the creation and growth of businesses; and in every important or mundane act, activity, situation, circumstance, and event we engage in, in which we attempt to accomplish in life. In all life the process of creating something anew is essentially the same.

Attention is the physical version of affection, which is a quality of Spirit. (MSS)

Organization, the Force, and Efficiency of Results
Organizing a work or an endeavor one level higher than its current status, creates substantial improvements of results relative to that effort. E.g. the likelihood of success of an activity may be doubled or more. That is the power of organization. Opening to the Divine Force however opens enables infinite possibilities, where productivity and success can be 10, 100, a 1000 times to infinity greater. It also enables the decent of one or more spiritual properties into the atmosphere of the work, such as Truth, Knowledge, Power, Peace, Oneness, and Delight. This is the power of Spiritual Organization, a super organizing mechanism; an instrument of the Divine Force

Service to Others that Expands a Work to Infinity
When you intentionally, actively make the effort to be of service to another in a work, you can elicit information that will in the end be of great benefit to all parties concerned. In essence, you have extended yourself from narrowly focused self-interest and opened to vaster universal forces and powers that expand the work to infinity.

Willingly Addressing a Debt Attracts Good Fortune
When a debt is paid off willingly, it has the power to make life respond positively in kind with great opportunity, fortune, and luck. We see this for an individual, who agreed to pay off an old lingering debt which instantaneously attracted a considerably better living situation; and we saw it in the society, when in the beginning of the 1990s America willingly addressed its hemorrhaging debt, which attracted a near decade boon of prosperity.

Evolutionary Rule to Not Exclude
The rule of evolution is not to exclude what you have exceeded which eliminates totality. [E.g.] Had Siddhartha [in Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha] submitted to his father, not with an ignorant physical submission but with the knowledge that doctrines [of his father] were of no value and his own conviction was not ripe to be acted upon, whatever he had realised in 40 years would have been abridged into four years and his own realisation would have been greater. The choice for him was between submission and defiance. His defiance arose from a mental conviction for which his other parts were not ready.
