Causes, the Nature of Fear
Fear is uncertainty at the level of sensation. (MSS)
Cause of Fear
Fear at its root is due to lack of knowledge about the conditions.
Fear is the most fundamental, i.e. physical
limitation of man. Even anger denotes a slight degree of mental
consciousness. Fear can arise instantaneously through unconscious

Clear understanding of the situation vanishes mental fear. More vital

of that level, and understanding of that clarity reaching the physical
consciousness help the man rise above physical fear.
Fear rises as long as one is wedded to separation. Fear goes forever

is ultimately transformed into Love, not courage. (MSS)
Thoughts on Fear
Fear is a perversion of the will. It is an active vibration opposing the
will and actively destroys the creation and existence of any idea,
thought or activity at the level it exists.
Fear is more of a nervous sensation than an emotion. The vibration of
fear and terror are ingrained in the nerves. The fear in the nerves
stirs up the stomach and spreads down below.
Fear in the mind is a fear of the understanding which makes the person
faint. It spreads to the nerves and often gives shocks to the system.
Physical fear is inherited from the animal life.
To be human, mental or nervous fears should not be there. When physical
(subconscious) fear is eliminated, Yoga is possible.
A mild fear generates confusion; a great fear destroys creativity; a
greater fear results in hatred or repulsion when suppressed.
Fear is the one emotion that cannot be a medium to approach the Divine
Absence of fear instantaneously generates constant useful activities. A
fearless person cannot be dull or lazy.
Whatever the mental or other capacities of a man, the presence of fear
in him will definitely cancel the final success of his projects.
Any perfection at any level requires the abolition of fear at that
The available enjoyment at any moment is brought down by fear.
Fear can hide itself behind over-eating, artificial emotional
relationships, over-indulgence in sex, or espousing non-existent
emotions or ideals.
Fear attracts accidents and violence. In very strong characters, it will
generate these things.
Fear in the nerves and dryness of the heart go together. Fear causes one
to grow thin and wiry.
Love finds it impossible to enter where fear lives.
Fear makes one cling to things and persons and prevents happiness or joy
from being felt.
Freedom is more the opposite of fear than courage.
Insistence in behaviour is a sign of fear. Fear seeks possession and
destroys free appreciation or enjoyment. The presence of fear is an
insurance against growth.
When one part of the personality grows beyond the others, the gap
created generates fear, i.e. when the mind makes progress but the
emotions do not make the same growth, fear is created.
Fear goes with poverty and ignorance. Freedom goes with plenty.
One man with fear in an organisation can prevent the organisation from
prospering since fear is a vibration that would dissolve creation.
Between two fear-ridden people, the relationship will be destructive and
happiness will be nil. The way of relating will either be through
clinging to each other or great distrust and tension.
The primitive man's courage before animals and weather is physical
courage. The politician has vital courage.
To conceive that the earth goes round the sun requires mental courage.
Unless the mind is full of courage, it will give way when ideas that are
not prevalent in the present society enter it. (MSS)
Fear and the Subconscient
The subconscient is an
unconscious and unevolved part of our inner being; a kind of
vestige of our primitive heritage. For example, a good deal of the
fear we experience in life wells up from this realm.
The subconscient has this overall negative nature because it has built
in memory of millennia of human suffering, disease, and death. It sends
up pessimistic, negative, fear-laden
messages intent on overcoming the positives that occur on the surface.
Its message is that anything positive on the surface is but a temporary
distraction and waste of time because we will all end in disease, death,
Fear and the Physical Vital Plane
physical/body plane is the Vital plane. It is a substance of subtler
substance and higher consciousness than the raw material substance and
aspects of the physical plane. Its first subplane is the
Physical Vital in the form of sensations of the nerves as urge,
desire, and fear.
The physical part of the vital plane is (physical vital) where we
experience the vital sensation
of the nerves, the central nervous system, where we experience urge,
desire, and fear.
Fear and Illness
There is no
greater support for physical health than having a positive attitude.
Elimination of fear, doubt, anxiety,
depression, and restlessness can really help one's health.
The fear of an illness increases its intensity.
One is weak
when fear of infection grips him. His
body falls ill, catching the infection more out of its vital
fear than as a process of infection.
Fear and Disease
In the 1930s, US president Franklin Roosevelt said that the only thing to fear is fear itself. He was referring to the terror people were experiencing as a result of the collapsing economy of the Great Depression, and the trust people should have in the government and society by putting their money back into the banks. Today we have similar fears, not only in financial matters, but in our
concerns about our health. The situation with the H1N1 virus is a case in point, as we see panic rising in many quarters.
The Mother said that 95% of all illnesses are psychological in origin. I.e. there is some wanting quality of our being --perhaps a negative attitude or a misguided belief -- that opens us to the vibrations of illness. If we were to understand what is wanting within us, or otherwise take to calm and inner faith, we would not attract illnesses, or if we did, the case would be mild. If we also open to the spiritual Force when such fear of illness arises in our thoughts and emotions, then 90% of all illnesses can be avoided.
And yet the society itself is also gripped by fear, as the media plays off the nervousness and unease of the people, not realizing that it does a disservice in propagating fright and panic. But then the society around us is a reflection of our own individual consciousness. Whether negativity comes from within or without, we need to be vigilant of fear-laden and other negative thoughts and emotions.
In the final analysis, Roosevelt's maxim holds true today as it did back then: especially when it comes to illness. Fear breaks down the outer sheath of our physical being that protects us from illness, allowing the disease to enter. However, if we remain unmoved by that fear, and open to the spiritual Force that is increasingly in the atmosphere, we can enter a room of virulent contagion and not be effected one iota.

-We waste so much of our lives worrying. How to turn worry into right
thought, feeling, and action is a key inner skill in life.
-When we rise in consciousness, we become much more aware of our
tendency to worry. This is a first step to eliminating it.
Worry Energizes a Problem
Man worries so much about an ordinary
problem of his that it is energised by his intense attention and
possesses him as an octopus. It is the same with diseases.
Worrying, Dark Circles, and Evocation of Joy
People with continuous dark circles under their eyes are of a worrying type. That deficiency can be overcome by continually trying to evoke feelings of happiness and joy.
Negative Life Response to Unclarity of Self-Conception, Self-Limitation
When you are not too clear about what you
want to accomplish, and you set out on an act to achieve it, watch how
life responds negatively with confusion or other forms of unsuccess.
From this we see the need for self-conception, i.e. to conceive of what
we wish to accomplish in the first place, and self-limitation, i.e. a
mental gathering of ourselves from a wider to a specific narrower focus,
mimicking the Creator who followed parallel processes in manifesting

On Overcoming Worry
Karmayogi defines worry as disease that is
developed by lack of faith. When we say faith, we normally think of
faith in Divine. But it also means all other faith we have - in our
skill, our capacity, our reputation, our relations, our business
atmosphere, our acumen, our intelligence, etc. - every form of faith
or belief is included here.
There will not be any worry as long as we think
that we are the "determinant". Worry starts only when we lose any
faith, or doubt our strength. Worry starts out of insecurity that we
are no more a determinant and we are losing control of result and
nothing is going to happen as we expected.
Every worry is based
on a fear. Every fear is based on a doubt. Every doubt has a seed of
absence of faith. Finding that and taking opposite of it that
increases the faith - preferably increasing faith on Mother - is the
way to convert worry into happiness.
Karmayogi says -
reverse working on this worry will reveal the higher determinant
required for this - skill, capacity, energy, perseverance, patience,
etc. Taking that is the way that one is surrendering his opinion and
prejudice and partial knowledge to the higher determinant. No worry
can be solved or surrendered in the same plane, that it is giving
trouble. Only higher knowledge of the situation, higher skill, higher
capacity or higher person or higher attitude or higher part of the
Being can solve the problem and bring the happiness. This is the
practical thing that can be done by one's own initiative as the thread
starter suggested for.
But when we see that problem and worries are
for progress, and if we define progress as evolution in consciousness
- it is subjecting the lower consciousness to the higher
consciousness, or allowing higher consciousness controlling the lower
consciousness is the thumb rule for Divine Ananda. In that sense,
spiritual ease comes from the consecration of the worry - what we
understand by mind that there is always a higher determinant -Divine
or Spirit. This is subjecting our worry of our mind to the higher
aspect - Divine or Spirit. Mind will then convince the vital to shed
its emotional disturbance and the released energy will activate the
matter for required task. (Ramesh Kumar)
The following lines from conversation
between Karmayogi and an American business man will be of use here:
Karmayogi gives the following method to an
American business man - (circulated as typed manuscript in late 80s):
To be free from worry - take a problem or
project which is worrying you, first you understand what theoretically
the project is, what it practically is. The translation of that
project from the paper to the field, what is the mental strength,
nervous, physical energy called for by the department or if it is your
project, by you. With your experience you would know what is expected
of your nerves, of your mind. You first examine whether you have it.
The point of exhaustion of skill, capacity etc. is the starting point
If you don't any of it have it, first acquire
it before you start implementing any other ideas. . If the theoretical
basis of a project is fully understood, and its practical necessities
are fully conceived, and if they are made full-proof in the
consideration, during the course of the consideration, the mind
suddenly says, "Yes, I understand all about it. It is not difficult"
The moment the mind gives that unseen signal
and there is full understanding of that, the necessary nervous energy
comes to us, the mental, nervous or physical energy needed to put it
into practice, comes to us. We live in the moment and all worry goes
Once that happens, if you initiate the project
now- anything may go wrong, anything may go right, it may be
withdrawn, it may be done, everybody may be worried, everybody may
panic, but worry cannot enter you. Everybody will be asking you, "Why
are you not worried? How is it you are not worried? Do you have an
alternative? You're going to be in soup! The whole scheme has come to
ruin. What are you going to do?" It is impossible for you to worry
Once the mind is so fully convinced, what
happens, the moment the mental comprehension is complete, it slightly
overflows into the next higher level. It begins to have some contact
with the next higher level which we call spirit, which one can call
the inner being. The strength comes from there and then you feel a
relief in the mental consideration of it. The whole thing will go
right, it won't go wrong. Even if it goes wrong, you won't be worried.
Later it will come right. When the mental understanding is just
theoretical, paper understanding, mind consents to that 75% or 80%. As
long as the mental consent or agreement or understanding is 99%, worry
is possible. The moment it is 100%, you turn over in the mind, wait
until that signal is given by the mind and a happy relief will be
And then you initiate. Nothing will go wrong.
And even if it goes wrong it will not give you worry.
Thoughts on Doubt
Doubts arise out of ignorance. They can be cleared by giving knowledge.
Irrationality raises doubts based on wishful thinking. They remain
unanswered by knowledge. Life presents them answers as pain.
Doubt arises from the physicality that surfaces. Total absence of doubt
shows the dynamism of physicality is no longer there, as in our walking
we never doubt the earth on which we place our foot. The earth is there,
but not with any dynamic presence in our waking consciousness.
Security without Truth
Seeking physical security alone without getting at its true cause
enables greater insecurity.
Suspicion and Doubts
The secret of SUSPICION is
faith in our doubts.

Cause & Solution to Fear
Fear at its root is due to lack of knowledge about the conditions. In

Fear is a primal reaction of
sensation to perception that one has no control or power over things.
Fear attracts the object of fear.
The more you focus on what you fear, the more it increases.
The first line of defense over fear is calm that enables better
understanding of the possibilities.
