Science and Yoga

v      Science has explored every phenomenon of life.

v      One of them is the field of the anthropologist who studied the relation between the brain, jaw structure and their relation with the formation of language, spoken and written.

v      They even see a correspondence between the stages of the written language and the level of prosperity in that community.

v      One thing they are not certain of is which is first -- consciousness or the structure. Maybe they are certain that the evolution of a new structure decides the level of consciousness. Matter first, consciousness next.

v      Sri Aurobindo addresses this issue at various points. In the chapter on conscious-Force He declares the Force is prior to the instrument.

v      Again Sri Aurobindo addresses the same issue in the chapter 'Cosmic Determinants'. The following are the arguments.

Life is shot through and through with chance.

Order, an Iron Order is also perceived.

Infinite inverting into finite and reemerging provides for change and order.

The infinite variation demanded by the journey of the finite to the infinite explains the chance.

This journey is subdivided into various stages. Each stage has to organise and establish itself before passing on to the next higher stage. Here comes the necessity for order.

The Infinite chooses its form into which the force of existence is compressed which evolves through a rhythm and progress.

The force changes into form and then emerges out of it.

The force is the Mind and the form is Matter. Hence Mind rules Matter. Later He says it is Supermind.

In declaring the complete process of creation, HE speaks of possibilities changing into actualities through the evolutionary imperative.

The whole vision of Supermind sees all the three simultaneously.

Mind being partial can see only one at a time.

It sees the possibilities or the resulting actuality, not both together.

Mind is unable to see the evolutionary imperative in the middle, as it is occult.

v      Man sees with the mind. He sees one part at a time. Mind is capable of seeing the cause as the effect, as intervening space is occult to its vision. A young man entering life sees he earns and supports the family. He is unable to see that the family fashioned his life and is still making his life possible, because he is selfish as well as looking inside.

v      In the last 7 chapters of Synthesis of Yoga HE explains the passage of Mind to Supermind through Intuitive Mind.

v      In that process HE explains Supramental thought, knowledge, sense.

v      Supramental thought and knowledge are by identity, a reverse of our separative knowledge.

v      The separative knowledge of the ego widens all over the universe in the subliminal and reverses its course from going down to going up and reaches the Intuitive knowledge above before reaching the finality.

v      The stage of reversal is occult to human mind. That occurs between our knowledge and intuitive knowledge.

v      Supramental sense, like supramental knowledge is one of identity. The Spirit seeing its projection outside and contacting its substance is Spiritual sense.

v      The same process is divided into waking knowledge, self-forgetful knowledge and trikala drishti.

v      The process of the scientist is well defined. Supramentalisation is equally well defined.

v      To be able to see the one in terms of the other and in the reverse order is the part of one who sees Science as an expression of yoga. To fully develop this correspondence is to develop the Science of Life.
