The Nature of the Evolving Soul (i.e. the Psychic Being)

Inside is the Soul which is the Spirit, which is a God in Embryo Trying to Be Born
Spirit is your soul, which is your true self. All of us nurture the seeds of divinity (or the Spirit) within us. Or in other words, inside us is a God or Goddess in embryo that wants to be born so that we can express our divinity. (MSS)

Evolving Spirit/Psychic Being
Aside from the Spirit which is the infinite, timeless, spaceless Being that is the source of and underlies all creation, the individual human's body and vital and mind has its own Spirit, which is the evolving Spirit, known as the psychic being, or the personal evolving soul. (Paraphrase of MSS)

Our True Self is Spiritual; We Are Spirit in Essence
One should always remember that our true Self is Spiritual; that essentially all of us are Spiritual beings that have taken manifestation in physical form. (MSS)

The Central and Psychic Beings
The central being is the spark of the Divine. Its deputy is the evolving soul, the Psychic Being, the True Self.

Rebirth and the Evolving Soul

We have a soul, which is the spark of the divine. Its deputy is our True Self -- our evolving Soul, also known as the Psychic Being. It is called the evolving soul because it is progressing through many births in its journey through time. It seeks to gain the essence of our experience for its own growth. Or to put it another way, as we grow, so does our evolving soul.

Since we cannot make all of our progress in one single lifetime, our true self, psychic being, evolving soul leaves us at death, rests for awhile, and is reborn into another being thereafter. It garners the experience of the person for its own Nourishment, leaves the form, rests in the ethereal planes, and then is reborn into another person to continue its journey of discovery and progress. Rebirth is therefore the method by which our True Self, psychic being, evolving Soul makes its own progress.

What benefit will we get from connecting to our True Self? When we come in touch with our evolving Soul, we more readily perceive our true purpose and meaning in life. We will also perceive what aspects of our being need to change. If we then make those changes, we will evolve in consciousness, which will also benefit our evolving Soul in its journey of discovery through multiple births. Also, by moving from the surface of life and into the depths of our being, culminating in this psychic entity, we feel a deep oneness with others and the world around us, and are guided by its inner influence at important points in our daily lives.

In addition, by connecting with our evolving Soul within, our mind expands and experiences continuous descents of intuitions and revelations of truth, which also gives nourishment to that inner True Self. It is also a means by which we can permanently change our nature into a supernature; as our mental, vital, and physical parts are perfected and divinized from within and by the action of the spiritual Force from above. We can progress further still and attain psychological and physical immortality in this life.

The path to make that happens requires the most profound conscious effort to evolve ourselves -- i.e. a yoga -- which will not only help us attain a supernature that is attuned to the deepest spiritual values, such as oneness, love, delight, truth, but will give deep knowledge and spiritual sustenance to the evolving Soul in its journey through time.

Ultimately, when we have attained our highest consciousness, then our True Self, evolving Soul can remain with us in this life forever. We become realized and immortal beings, a member of a New Species of human, who can become the harbinger of a new Divine Life on Earth.

 

We Express the Divine through Our Evolving Soul and More

The Infinite consciousness is the source of all.  It manifests in us as the spark of the Divine, our Soul. It also expresses as an evolving Soul, which derives sustenance from our own individual progress in its multi-birth journey through space and time.

As we connect more deeply and get in touch with our True Selves, the Infinite consciousness not only expresses in our own Soul, but in other facets of our being -- mental, vital, and physical.

 

Discovering the True Center of Our Own Being, and of Life Around Us

Behind the surface personality in man, lies his true inner being. By contacting this deeper center he gains freedom from all the conflicting elements of his personality and the power to mould them into a unified harmonious whole. He discovers the Divine within himself.

So too, behind and within all other living beings and material objects, there is a center of pure consciousness. By entering into conscious relationship with that center in other things and beings he gains a direct knowledge of his external environment and the power to influence conditions and events. The Soul and the Personal Evolving Soul

We have two souls, or rather it has two aspects. The first is eternal, a spark of the Divine that all humans share. It is universal and impersonal. It is said that when we die, we we shed the physical, vital, and mental essence and sheaths of our being in succession, and finally rest in that eternal spirit.

The second aspect of soul is individual, personal; related specifically to the person it inhabits. It is the evolving soul, and has taken birth in our being so that it can absorb the truths of our lives in its continuous, multi-birth quest and journey through time. As it garners the knowledge it seeks, it too evolves. When it can no longer garner further knowledge from our person, it withdraws, that person dies, and the personal evolving soul seeks a new personality to inhabit, continuing in its evolutionary journey of spiritual discovery.

If we are make contact with our own evolving soul within, we enable a number of possibilities. E.g. we open to a myriad of universal and transcendent forces and powers, as well as the shedding of ego, the onset of oneness, an opening of the mind to intuitions and revelations of knowledge, and an intense delight and joy in being alive.

In addition, when we connect with our evolving soul -- Sri Aurobindo calls it the "psychic being" -- we tend to remember moments in previous births. I.e. as we connect to the psychic being in this life, there is an opening to and memory of an experience of the psychic being in its previous inhabitant. In that way, we can forge a link to our previous births that share the same personal evolving soul. 

 

Evolution of the Individual, the Soul, the Universe, and the Divine

The Infinite, Divine Reality has extended itself into Life and is thereby evolving in the universe through us; through our deepest awareness, which we realize by connecting to our own True Selves, our Evolving Soul within. As we progress and evolve in life, so too does our soul. As individuals and their souls evolve, so does the universe which is a composite of their progress. As the universe evolves, so does the Supreme, the Reality, Brahman, which has extended Itself from its immutable, ineffable, timeless, spaceless status into the field of life, including the multiplicity of forces and forms, including us. Or to put it another way, God is evolving through us. 

 

The Oneness of the Divine and the Soul

There is a Divine Reality and Spirit out of which all things have and continue to emerge. What we forget is that within us is that very same Spirit and Light. It is our evolving Soul within. That is why in the ancient Hindu texts it is said that the Spirit/Soul in us and the Divine Reality are One and the same thing. I.e. Atman is Brahman.

 

We are a Personality and the Spiritual Person

We are each a Personality; which is what we normally associate ourselves with. However, our true selves is the Person, the spiritual Being that we truly are that is journeying through time and rebirth in its quest toward spiritual and integral realization.

  

The Way of Soul that is Opposite of Ego

The view of the Soul is the opposite of Ego. It is that which feels to be one with, a part of the Divine inside; which feels deeply connected with everything in life, including each person we come in contact with. Soul is the True Self, not the illusionary self of Ego. It is the Inner Guide of true help, whereas the Ego is the creator of false illusion. In Soul, life and others are constantly responding to us is a positive way. 

To connect with Soul one must build an inner life, moving away from surface living and forge a connection with our deeper parts that are One with the Divine and Its Intent. Constant self-offering to the spiritual Force will more easily make this possible. Connecting with one's evolving Soul is beyond any experience one can know in life.

Putting yourself in the other person's shoes, feeling joy in the other person's successes, and practicing self-givingness are additional practical methods to make the connection with others, and are infinitely effective.

 

Soul to Soul Oneness that Issues from the Depths

When I am a Soul, looking out on another Soul, we are One. When I am a personality, looking out on another personality, we are divided. The goal is to move from the second condition to the first. I do that when I move from surface living to a deeper poise within, where I overcome ego, discover stillness, look out on the world through a "witness consciousness" and feel a deep oneness with others and with life. I gain that Mutuality when I discover my True Self; my evolving Soul within.

   

Influence of the Inner Guide

As you move your consciousness away from the surface of life to deeper parts within, culminating with your Soul and True Self, you progressively make contact with your Inner Guide, which spontaneously tells you which way to turn, and what to avoid, including what thought or feeling or action to hold in check.

Because your True Self and Soul is of the spirit and truth, the Guide's subtle suggestions are always precise and correct. As a result of following that Influence, you have ongoing subtle insight and awareness into the conditions of life, you tend to take right decisions and action that attract good fortune, and over time develop deep feelings of purposefulness, joy, and fulfillment.

You can begin to connect with your inner Guide by withdrawing from the surface bubblings of life, and a preoccupation with the inputs of the senses, including the visual and auditory. This can be done through meditation, shifting your concentration within, opening to the spiritual Force (consecration), and other means. As a result, you increasingly detect and adhere to the subtle suggestions percolating up from the Guide of your inner being. Gradually your inner Guide will become a familiar friend, a personal guru and sage, directing you to the positive and herding you away from the negative. As a result, life will increasingly become a Wonder, energizing you to no end.  

 

Becoming Instruments of the Divine Intent that Enables True, Spiritual Individuality

When we discover our deepest Self and Soul, we move beyond the limited views of others, of the social milieu, and, as a result we are able to express our true individuality in life. In fact, all great pioneers take their cues from within, from their deepest Self, which formulate into personal values and beliefs that manifest as forms of real progress in life.

There is also another dynamic that evokes an ultimate form of true individuality. It is not a movement originating in our deepest self, but from the Heights, the Cosmic realms, that can manifest as real benefit. When we are receptive and open ourselves to the descending spiritual Force and Power, we enable one or several aspects of the Will and Intention of the Divine to bring forth new, unique possibilities in the world. Through that opening, we become instruments for dynamic, creative, and unprecedented progress and express in another way our True Spiritual Individuality.

Of course, each one of us can collaborate with the Intention of the Divine. Now that the spiritual  Force is descending into the earth's atmosphere with increasing power, it is that much easier to become instruments of Its cosmic Intent. It is another way we can have a direct impact on the world in an increasingly Psychological and Spiritual Age.

 

Evolving Soul as Interface Between Transcendent and Our Individual Existence

-The evolving Soul is the interface, connecting point, commonality between the transcendent divine and our own individual self.

-It is there that we can experience all of the divine powers in our practical lives -- peace, silence, harmony, oneness, truth, knowledge, wisdom, power, creativity, love, delight, timelessness, and infinity.

-It is there that we experience the timeless eternity of the Unmanifest in the time eternity of life. (Karmayogi calls this "Third Dimension of Time")

-As we evolve, the evolving soul incorporates that experience in its Journey of Discovery through multiple births.

-When our soul progresses through us, the universe evolved, fulfilling the transcendent purpose it is an instrument of.

Historical Transition in the View of the Soul 

There has been a transition in perspective about the nature of the Soul down through spiritual history. Here is my take:

--Krishna avatar indicated to Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita that he has a Soul by which he can know his true essence, the truths of life and how to act, and the transcendent Godhead. Sri Aurobindo thousands of years later discovers not only the Soul, the spark of the divine, but the EVOLVING Soul (Psychic Being). He said it was his greatest discovery.

Interestingly, He says that when we discover the Evolving Soul within, we open above to the Supramental Influence. I.e. going within to the deepest depths, opens us upward above mind to supermind gaining us ultimate, integral knowledge, plus its transformative capacity and power to change life.

Sri Karmayogi adds that if we consecrate often, (i.e open to the spiritual Force before acting), we will forge a path within to the evolving soul, which will enable not only oneness, non-separativeness, and the end of our essential Ignorance, but the ongoing descent of the Supramental force (the power of the Divine Mother) into life, transforming us and the world around us.

Thus we see an evolution in an understanding of the nature of True Self/Psychic Being.

--Also, practically in modern life, we see that each person has the capacity to become a true individual, forging and making his own life based on his or her deepest values. Ultimate True Selfness is forged by discovering our Evolving Soul, which is to get in touch with our true individual uniqueness, and operate from there, enabling ultimate individuality in life.

--Finally, the Evolving Soul itself is a spirit entity that moves from one host to the next as it seeks spiritual sustenance and knowledge from the life of that person it inhabits. When we connect to our psychic being through constant consecration, we come to realize who we truly are, and can act from there, expressing our ultimate, True Individuality. It is the ultimate way the 21st century person can express himself in life.

Supramental Existence (i.e. its descent in our being of the Force at all planes and our ultimate ascent in consciousness to our highest status) is a stage beyond that. That would usher in the ultimate transformation of humanity and a divine life on earth.

Location of Psychic Being
-The psychic being, i.e. the evolving soul is located in the inner being in the heart of the subliminal.

The Soul and Our Progress
-According to spiritual tradition the soul chooses to be born in a particular set of conditions in order to make one essential progress during each lifetime. When that one lesson has been learned, it leaves the body to assimilate its experience and then reincarnate in a new life for a further progress. Rare souls can fulfill that lifetime mission and be reborn spiritually to make the progress of a second life in the same body.

-So long as the soul aspires for progress, life continues to present challenges that compel its further evolution.

 

The Journey of the Soul

The spiritual tradition tells us the soul chooses to be born in a particular set of conditions in order to make progress during that person's lifetime. After the lesson has been learned, the soul leaves the body to assimilate its experience and then reincarnates in a new life to make further progress.

For example, in Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice, Mr. Darcy, though a very wealthy man with a polished exterior, presents a haughty and arrogant disposition on occasion. And yet when he meets Eliza Bennet, he is overcome by his feelings for her, struck by the light in her eyes. Yet to win her over, he realizes he has to change his nature, which he does, leading to a critical event in the story where he is able to demonstrate his dramatically improved character. As a result, Eliza responds very favorably, culminating in their happy marriage. In essence, Darcy has made a powerful progress in life; precisely what his soul had sought when it entered his being at birth.

Over a decade ago, an individual I know of went through an intense change of his own. Not so much a shift from lower to higher character, or wanting attitudes to a higher deposition, but a powerful psychological and spiritual transformation that took shape through months of intense fear. So great were the 3-6 hour daily onslaught of causeless terror that during that he had to constantly remain in a state of immovable meditation, calling peace and calm to prevent that person from going mad. Along the way, he came to understand that this was what his soul sanctioned in order to move to the next stage of his life. In fact, from that day on, he embarked on a profound personal and spiritual journey that included a new career as a thinker and writer. Because of that cathartic episode, he was reborn into a new life, enabling his soul to make a great progress.

As it turns out, there are also uncommon individuals who actually make several such changes in a single lifetime. These rare souls go through consecutive stages of transformation that give sustenance to their souls in its journey through time. One such individual is Jean Valjean, the main character of Victor Hugo's nineteenth century masterpiece, Les Miserables. In fact, Valjean passes through four distinct life-changing stages that enable him to grow from a husk of a man to a veritable saint.

Jean Valjean's first transformation took place in prison, where he spent 19 years for the petty offense of stealing a loaf of bread. There he not only developed a new level of physical strength, but a new emotional intensity through his newfound cause of social justice. Because of the harsh abuse he suffered, he committed himself to overcoming similar abuses in society. As a result, Valjean had changed from an individual who hardly spoke or looked at anybody, to one dedicated to overcoming injustices in the world.

However, Jean Valjean's soul was ready for more growth. And so in his second incarnation, he came to know a humble bishop who showed him the power of selfless and self-givingness.  When the bishop saved him from the authorities after escaping from prison, Valjean came to deeply admire his goodness, goodwill, and generosity. It was a spiritual like perception for Valjean, as he now saw the brute, husk of the man he was, and the self-giving man he could become if he emulated the bishop's behavior. And so from that day on, he dedicated himself to a life of self-givingness.

And yet Jean Valjean's being was ready for more change. As long as the soul aspires for progress, life will continue to present challenges that compel its further evolution. In the years that followed Valjean was able to realize his aspirations of self-givingness by becoming a beloved and prosperous businessperson. However, one day Valjean learned that someone named Jean Valjean had been convicted of a crime. He knew that this was not the case because he was the person with that name.  After wrestling with his conscience, he went to the court in Arras and revealed that he was the real Jean Valjean, thereby freeing the accused. However, by doing so, the authorities learn that he was an escaped convict; forcing Valjean once again to be a fugitive from the law. It would mean that he would have to give up all that he had built up in his professional life. What actually occurred was that life tested his full commitment to his personal ideal of self-givingness. By acceded to a level of psychological purity, by doing what was right and true, Valjean had made the third great growth and progress of his life.

Though his mind and life found great emotional satisfaction in his new solitary existence, his soul aspired for more growth and adventure. That would come in the form of his relationship with his beloved adopted daughter Cossette. Though he rescued her as a child from the clutches of evil, and poured his love into her in the years that followed, Cossette blossomed into a young woman and found herself in love with Marius, a self-giving, young idealist.

Upon learning of the romance, Valjean through a great psychological and spiritual-like effort withdrew his possessiveness toward Cossette, retreating to his home so that she could exercise her freedom and pursue her own deep love for Marius. As a result, over time, he became weary, fell ill, and began to wither him away. However, as a result of that self-restraining effort, life responded in overwhelming fashion when near the end, Marius and Cossette arrived at his deathbed, confessing their deep love and appreciation for all he had done in lives, including saving Marius's life at the barricades.  Most telling, when Cossette confessed her deep love for Valjean, all that he aspired for in his life was fulfilled, enabling him to die a happy man. That giving up of attachment to the one person he so dearly love din the name of Cossette's best interest was Valjean's final effort of self-givingness in life. He had now reached the heights of spiritual purity, of selfless love through non-attachment. As a result, he had now completed his multi-birth journey of the soul in a single lifetime.

A soul is born in each of us in order to derive one essential progress. Just as we are evolving, so is the soul through in its own cosmic journey. But the soul will only find fulfillment in us if we rise to a higher level of consciousness. The soul of Mr. Darcy was fulfilled when he made the psychological adjustment and changed a central part of his nature, winning over the woman he loved. Jean Valjean went steps beyond and evolved his being four times in a single lifetime, an almost unprecedented event that is indicative of a very rare soul.

This being the case, then what is life asking of us? What does our soul seek through change in our own being? Or to another way, how can we improve ourselves in a way that gives sustenance to our soul?

In the end, we not here merely to exist, or even to love and achieve, but to make one essential progress in our lifetime. But do we know what that is, and if so, do we understand what needs is to be done to make it happen? If we can identify those parts of our being that need change, then we will move in harmony with our soul's aspiration. If we then go a step further and make that change, not only will we progress and evolve, but so will our soul in its journey through space and time. What the Soul Seeks from US
The key is for each of us to make the necessary growth in this life. That takes a deep evaluation of knowing who we are now, and what we can become, as Valjean and Darcy did. We can do it more consciously, rather than subconsciously, i.e. pushed by the whims of life, as they were.

This progress is what the evolving soul yearns for; why it incarnated in us. It knows that we have the stuff to enable further progress. It awaits patiently to see if we can make that one progress, so it can take the essence of our experience and then continue in its voyage through the subtle planes.

If we move to a deeper consciousness, we can become more connected to the psychic, which will enable us to see who we truly are, allowing us to make one or many substantial progresses (as Valjean did, though more consciously), double and triple fulfilling the psychic's purpose for incarnating in us. (By the way, the more we consecrate, the more we move to the depths, and thus to the psychic being.)

Some of us have very evolved psychics, and we incarnate that. Yet still the soul is seeking a further growth through our experiences. Even great souls incarnate for further progress. E.g. Mother's Being sought the physical transformation to a new being and to push the world in the direction of the supramental, divine life on earth. Sri Aurobindo came to experience and explain the New Life through spiritual mind. Their very developed psychic (evolving souls) were nurtured by these startling attempts and successes.

The Soul's Gathering Experience
The soul gathers the essential elements of its experiences in life and makes that its basis of growth in the evolution; when it returns to birth it takes up with its mental, vital, physical sheaths so much of its Karma as is useful to it in the new life for further experience. (Sri Aurobindo)

What the Soul Carries
A soul carries what is given to it by the previous generation, what it has gained from the previous birth and what it aims to become in this birth. (MSS)

Evolving Spirit/Psychic Being
Aside from the Spirit which is the infinite, timeless, spaceless Being that is the source of and underlies all creation, the individual human's body and vital and mind has its own Spirit, which is the evolving Spirit, known as the psychic being, or the personal evolving soul (Paraphrase of MSS)

The Psychic Being and the Central Being
The being of man is composed of these elements - the psychic behind supporting all, the inner mental, vital and physical, and the outer, quite external nature of mind, life and body which is their instrument of expression.  But above all is the central being (jivatman) which uses them all for its manifestation: it is a portion of the Divine Self; but this reality of himself is hidden from the external man who replaces this inmost self and soul of him by the mental and vital ego. It is only those who have begun to know themselves that become aware of their true central being; but still it is always there standing behind the action of mind, life and body and is most directly represented by the psychic which is itself a spark of the Divine.  It is by the growth of the psychic element in one's nature that one begins to come into conscious touch with one's central being above.  When that happens and the central being uses a conscious will to control and organise the movements of the nature, it is then that one has a real, a spiritual as opposed to a partial and merely mental or moral self mastery. From Soul to Psychic Being (Personal Evolving Soul)
Aspiration is almost always an expression of the psychic being - the part of us that's organized around the divine center, the small divine flame deep within human beings. You see, this divine flame exists inside each human being, and little by little, through all the incarnations and karma and so on, a being takes shape around it, which Theon called the "psychic being." And when the psychic being reaches its full development, it becomes a kind of bodily or at any rate individual raiment of the soul. The soul is a portion of the Supreme - the jiva is the Supreme in individual form. And since there is only one Supreme, there is only one jiva, but with millions of individual forms. This jiva begins as a divine spark - immutable, eternal and infinite too (infinite in possibility rather than dimension). And through all the incarnations, whatever has received and responded to the divine Influence progressively crystallizes around the jiva, which becomes more and more conscious as well as more and more organized. Ultimately it becomes a completely conscious individual being, master of itself and moved exclusively by the divine Will. That is to say, an individual expression of the Supreme. This is what we call the "psychic being."

Generally speaking, those who practice yoga have either a fully developed, independent psychic being which has taken birth again to do the Divine's work, or else a psychic being in its last incarnation wanting to complete its development and realize itself. (The Mother)

The Spirit is Evolving
-Sri Aurobindo posits the theory of the evolving Spirit as against the traditional theory of unchanging Spirit or the Immutable Spirit.

-The evolving Spirit is the Psychic Being, the Personal evolving soul within the individual.

-The evolving Spirit evolves out of Ignorance into knowledge, seeking the Delight of being in the emergence. (MSS, extracts)

Sri Aurobindo and the Evolving Soul
Sri Aurobindo describes the Evolving Soul that progresses and grows through the experiences of successive individuals it inhabits. (He actually says this Psychic Being is the deputy and outgrowth of the Pure Soul that is transcendent and implicit in every person.) Sri Aurobindo spent his entire life trying to come in contact with that evolving True Self and spirit by plunging deep within over many decades, and said that he finally came in deep contact with it. He then went on to say it is the key to the evolution of life on earth and therefore the unfolding of the Divine in creation.

Versions of the Psychic Being
-The Psychic Being [the personal evolving soul] has four versions. [physical, vital, mental, spiritual]
-The psychic is seated in all parts of our being as a part and is also centrally located behind the heart centre (though not in the heart centre itself).
-The psychic being is the personal evolving soul which has entered us to gain the essence of our growth in its journey in its own spiritual evolution. It is in essence spirit evolving.

Mental Psychic
-The psychic in the Mind makes one a genius.
-The mental psychic can give the right guidance. However, being of the mind, it lacks power. It cannot effectuate. However, when the human will (i.e. the human vital will) endorses the psychic light, it becomes invincible.

Vital Psychic
-The vital psychic is more powerful than the mental psychic for two reasons. First, being vital, it inherently possesses power. Second, it knows no, is incapable of falsehood; it is always true. Its perception is unerring. And because of this truth, it is powerful.  Thus life becomes lucky when the vital psychic expresses in action. Positive outcomes and responses from life ensue greatly from the action of truth expressing the vital psychic. Its efficiency is greater. Its characteristic is GOOD WILL.
-The best example of a vital psychic being was Nehru. When a member in the Parliament accused Nehru of jealousy, a member of the opposition commented, "You cannot teach Nehru jealousy".  (Paraphrase of MSS)

The Psychic Being-
-Resides inside the Subliminal; actually in a cave of the subliminal.
-Each individual has a soul, a spark of the Divine. The psychic being is the deputy of or an extension of the soul.
-The psychic becomes formed as we reach grow and reach a threshold of growth, which puts us in contact with it.
-It is an evolving entity absorbing those aspects of the individual it inhabits growth that are useful for its own growth. When it can no longer absorb soul insight from the current host, it moves to another host through death and rebirth.

How Humans Come to Be, Die
The soul takes birth each time, and each time a mind, life and body are formed out of the materials of universal Nature according to the soul's past evolution and its need for the future.

When the body is dissolved, the vital goes into the vital plane and remains there for a time, but after a time the vital sheath disappears.  The last to dissolve is the mental sheath.  Finally, the soul or psychic being retires into the psychic world to rest there till a new birth is close.

This is the general course for ordinarily developed human beings.  There are variations according to the nature of the individual and his development.  For example, if the mental is strongly developed, then the mental being can remain; so also can the vital, provided they are organised by and centered around the true psychic being; they share the immortality of the psychic.

The Personal Evolving Soul (The Psychic Being, the True Self)
Each person has a soul, which we can think of as an inlet of the great ocean of the Divine spirit. The soul is in essence a spark of the Divine in each of us.

This soul extends itself to something we call the personal evolving soul, otherwise known as the Psychic Being or the True Self. Personal Soul within the Inner Being

The buried Spirit is the immutable Spirit, it does not change. But the life we live - our daily lives - is Spirit in disguise. Rapid Evolution of the Soul through Spirit in Life
The personal evolving soul of the individual takes birth in a body in order to gather one new attribute through that host person -- e.g. greater courage, strength, intelligence, generosity, etc.; it can even seek the reverse. It is for this gathering experiential nourishment from its myriad of hosts that the soul travels in its slow journey through successive lives.

However, by connecting to Spirit within ourselves we can overcome this seemingly endless journey. Through Spirit we can enable rapid evolution and change, add more than one new positive trait to one's character, thus providing the evolutionary sustenance that the evolving soul inside our self seeks, abridging multiple births into one fortunate and joyful life.

Another way of saying this is that through our connection to spirit in life we break the slow cycles of the karma of rebirth. Discovering the Mental, Vital, and Physical Aspects of the Personal Evolving Soul
Who am I? Am I my thoughts, my feelings, my physical sensations? Or am I my True Self, my personal evolving soul? It is the latter. But how can I escape from this triple tyranny of what I now perceive myself to be. We can begin by offering, i.e. consecrating our thoughts to the higher power, to the Force. Since thoughts are not really ours to begin with since they enter us from the outside, by offering them, we are not bound by them, and as a result take a step within, to the mental part of our personal evolving soul. That becomes one pillar of our new true foundation.
