Immortality of the Physical Body

Immortality of the Body, the Inner Psychological Being

Sri Aurobindo indicates that there can be immortality in the body, as well as in the vital and mental being. Immortality for our body is the capacity to have an ever-sustaining physical life, or more particularly the ability to live as long as one wishes. That is possible if the consciousness of the physical cells respond to the influence of the spiritual Force.

Immortality for our inner psychological being is to come in touch with and completely identify with our True Self; our Evolving Soul within. From that poise, we feel that we are infinite beings, have lived before, are living infinitely now, will further transform in future births, and settle into one immortal life on earth as fully developed spiritual beings -- in a single continuous and progressive stream of existence.

Also by identifying with our evolving soul we experience the timelessness of the Eternal Source in the passing of time, which makes our lives seem infinitely vast in length, scope, and power.

Death Compels Urge for Immortality
D
eath itself creates the urge for immortality in life.

Beyond Mind and Immortality
By getting out of mind, one can compel the body to live forever.

Beyond Mental Ego and Immortality
By coming out of the mental ego, the body can easily believe in its immortality.

Immortality form Soul to (physical) Life
The concept of immortality began with the soul. Now it must come to life.

Immortality in Time
Immortality has no roots in eternity. Eternity can flower as immortality in Time.

Immortality through Cellular Transformation

The Mother and the Transformation of the Physical Body

The Mother often referred to death as a mere state of mind, a state of mind of the cells that the cells accepted. If they could change their perspective, if they did not accept death as an inevitability, this could help the cells maintain their form without their deteriorating. This perhaps echoes recent discoveries in science that each cell has the genetic code of life, and that the code if understood could surely be altered. The difference is that with the Mother's approach, the code, if you will, would be modified through consciousness, through the Force, through the cells own evolution and transformation, instead of my making physical changes to the code by scientists and engineers.

She noted that one of the keys to the physical transformation was overcoming the effect of the "physical mind" and the subconscious (which they called the subconscient). She said that this part of the nature is defeatist, grumbling, filled with inertia, where illness gets reinforced, and perhaps the great physical barrier to the physical transformation. Realizing that this was one of the great impediments to the emergence of the new species, she tried to bring in the Force into this part of her being.

Changes in Consciousness and Physical Transformation, Immortality

Material-oriented science tells us that mutations in genes causes animal and human life to change. But they have it backwards, for it is changes in consciousness that alter the physical. E.g. when we move to a higher level of awareness, our physical bodies are effected, as there is a change in molecules, enzymes; even our genetic and cellular makeup. When we rise in consciousness, higher emotional, mental, and spiritual status emerges, depending on our starting point. Even our physical bodies can be transfigured this way. E.g. those of a higher consciousness have the ability to live years if not decades longer. It can one day become a path of willed immortality. The key there will be to bring to bear the power of the Spiritual Force  to transmute the programming in our cells that have accepted suffering and death over thousands of generations.

The Human Aspiration, Including Immortality

Sri Aurobindo concluded that by having the unitarian view of the Reality (which he calls "supramental perception"), we overcome our perceptions of contradiction, overcome our divided nature, and thereby fulfill our human aspiration for God, Light, Peace, Freedom, Bliss, and Immortality.
